Workshop Leader: Parker Gibson, UX Consultant at Slalom
Session Description: In this workshop, we will explore how I create conceptual hand typography/lettering combined with tools like photoshop & illustrator to create a custom look & feel. Feel free to bring a computer, pencils, pens and any other materials such as a sketchbook or paper to use or just sit back and take in the experience.
Get to know Parker: I'm a designer living in Edwardsville, IL currently working as UX/UI Consultant at Slalom. I began designing in early 2008 creating digital art in photoshop which evolved into learning more traditional graphic design creating posters and signage etc. My passion for design is sort of all over the place which has led me to work on a variety of project types. I consider myself an open book to share what I know, how I create and love to work with other passionate people.
More than Pixels: Collaboration as Social Change as Design Practice
Workshop Leaders: Caitlin Metz, Co-Founder of On Being in Your Body, & Rebecca Gorley, Communications Director at ArchCity Defenders
Session Description: A workshop about how design impacts social change through on-ground, off-screen, accessible engagement; facilitated by Rebecca Gorley and Caitlin Metz. Together we will explore the expanse of possibility within collaborations and how to humanize the experience of marginalized folks within our community; through a case study of Pro Se STL, a collaboration between ArchCity Defenders and Caitlin Metz. This workshop is about raising awareness and creating actionable, and immediate care for our community through a generous exchange of knowledge and skill.
We believe that design should be compassionate; that everyone deserves beautiful, accessible and tender things to help them move through an otherwise harsh and scary world. Together we have the power to make the world a little softer and easier to navigate.
Get to know Caitlin: Caitlin is an illustrator, letterpress printer, and educator, teaching at Maryville University. She makes work about the construct of time, multiplicity of identity and gender, mental health, and what it means to be a human. She is the co-founder of On Being in Your body; a small press and space for embodied wisdom. She teaches workshops and online courses that give voice to the body through the language of art and design: expanding the discourse about what it means to create and be in conversation with yourself and the world around you. She is currently writing a book with her partner, Victoria Emanuela about the return to, and reclamation of your body with Penguin Random House.
Get to know Rebecca: Rebecca is the Communications Director at ArchCity Defenders, a nonprofit civil rights law firm. She oversees content creation and publication on ArchCity’s social media channels, collaborates with filmmakers, and pitches and places news stories which expose injustice, counter misrepresentation and distortion of poor people and people of color in mainstream media narratives, and impact community conversation on issues impacting the St. Louis region. Rebecca has a background in community organizing, writing, digital storytelling, and media advocacy. She has two side-projects featuring stories of loss and longing, called Overnight Janitor and The Payphone, which can be found on Instagram.
Workshop Leader: Jason Keeven, Digital Experience Director at Brighton Agency
Session Description: In this hands-on workshop, we will explore how use photography to take your portfolio story-telling to the next level. After briefly exploring commercial lighting techniques, and how they were created, we will break into smaller groups and explore how you can bring that commercial feel to your work using easy to find everyday objects and tools.
Get to know Jason: Jason is a Saint Louis based Experience and Creative Director with over twenty years of professional expertise producing work for the food, beverage, spirits, and technology industries. His focus is on creating deeply useful, usable, and engaging user experiences for leading companies. His diverse background has allowed him to create and lead award-winning campaigns and experiences for brands like: Campari, Coca-Cola, Delta Airlines, LG, Mars, P&G, Snyder’s-Lance, Treasury Wine Estates, and Whirlpool.
